Why We Pre-Book Every Client at 3rd Coast Salon

The short version: At 3rd Coast Salon, we ask every client to pre-book their next appointment before they leave the chair. It's not a sales tactic. It's the only way to guarantee your preferred stylist and time slot, especially for color and extension clients who maintain on a schedule. Pre-booking also keeps your color from drifting and your cut from growing out past its plan.

If you've been a client at 3rd Coast Salon, you've heard one of us ask the same question on your way out: "Want to grab your next one on the books?" That question is a habit, not a script. We pre-book every client who's open to it because pre-booking is the single thing that makes the rest of the experience work.

This piece explains why we do it, what it gets you, and what happens if you skip it.

What does pre-booking actually mean?

Pre-booking means scheduling your next appointment before you walk out of the current one. At our front desk in our River North suite, that takes about 90 seconds. We look at your maintenance window, pull up your stylist's calendar, and lock in a slot at the cadence that fits the service you just had.

For a single process color, that's typically 4 to 6 weeks out. For a balayage, 8 to 12 weeks. For a haircut, anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks depending on the cut. For extensions, the move-up window your stylist sets for your specific method.

Why we ask, in our own words

"We pre-book because we want our clients to keep their preferred time and their preferred stylist. River North bookings fill 3 to 6 weeks ahead, sometimes longer in the run-up to the holidays. If you wait until your roots show to call us, your stylist's calendar may already be full when you need them."

That's the practical reason. The other reason is about the hair itself. Color drifts on a predictable curve. Cuts grow out on a predictable curve. We know what your hair will look like at week 6 and week 10. If we put your appointment on the calendar at the right point on that curve, you walk in with hair that's still wearable, not hair that's been past its prime for two weeks.

What pre-booking gets the client

Your time slot is guaranteed. Saturday mornings, Friday after 4pm, and weekday lunch hours are the first slots to fill. If you want one of those repeatedly, pre-booking is the only reliable way to hold it.

Your stylist is guaranteed. If you've built a relationship with Kevin for color or Phillip for cuts, you don't want to land with another stylist because your usual one is booked. Pre-booking keeps that relationship intact.

Your color stays consistent. A toner you walked out with at week 0 will fade by week 8 to 10. A pre-booked refresh catches the fade before it shows. Color held this way costs less to maintain over the year because we're never doing a heavy correction visit.

Your cut keeps its shape. Precision cuts only read like precision cuts for so many weeks. If you grow yours out 14 weeks instead of 10, the first 30 minutes of your next appointment go to re-establishing shape, not refining what was there.

What pre-booking does for the salon

We're transparent about this too. Pre-booking makes our schedule run smoother. When clients pre-book, the team can see the full month ahead instead of guessing. That lets us spread the load across stylists, avoid double-booking, and protect the time we set aside for color corrections and new-client consultations.

It also reduces last-minute scramble emails. If you're not pre-booked and you call us on a Wednesday looking for a Saturday slot, we want to fit you in. Sometimes we can't. Pre-booking removes that frustration on both sides.

What this is NOT

Pre-booking is not a contract. You can move the appointment. You can cancel the appointment. We ask for 24 hours notice on cancellations so we can fill the slot, but the pre-booked time isn't locked in stone.

It's also not a sales push for more frequent visits than your hair needs. We pre-book at the maintenance window your stylist recommends, not sooner. If your stylist says balayage every 12 weeks, we book 12 weeks. We don't shrink that to 10 to get an extra appointment per year.

What happens if I don't pre-book?

Nothing bad. You're welcome to call or book online when you're ready. The risk is the one we already mentioned: your preferred stylist and your preferred time may not be available when you want them. That's a particular issue for clients who only have one viable booking window in their week.

One pattern we see often: a client doesn't pre-book, lets the calendar slip, and ends up two or three weeks past their ideal maintenance window. Their next appointment then has to do more work to get them back to where they were. That extra work shows up as more time in the chair and sometimes more product. Pre-booking prevents that loop.

How we make pre-booking easy

Three options.

At the chair. Your stylist will pull up the calendar at the end of your appointment and offer a few options. Pick one.

Online. If you'd rather check your own calendar first, you can book through our online booking link any time. The system shows your stylist's open slots.

By phone. Call (312) 929-2627 Tuesday through Saturday during business hours. We're closed Sunday and Monday.

You'll get an email confirmation and a reminder before the appointment. If you need to move it, the link in the confirmation makes that quick.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance can I pre-book?

The booking system holds up to several months out. For most clients, the right window is the maintenance interval for the service you just had: 4 to 6 weeks for single process, 8 to 12 weeks for balayage, 6 to 12 weeks for cuts.

What's your cancellation policy?

We ask for 24 hours notice on cancellations or reschedules so we can offer the slot to another client. Same-day cancellations and no-shows may incur a fee. Your stylist will go over the specifics during booking.

Can I pre-book a different service than my last one?

Yes. If you want to book a cut after a color appointment, or add a treatment, the front desk will set it up. Tell us at the chair what you want next.

Can I pre-book with a different stylist?

Yes, especially if you're booking a cut after a color appointment. We coordinate stylists so you don't have to make two separate trips.

What if I'm not sure when I'll be free in 8 weeks?

Pre-book anyway. The reschedule link in your confirmation email lets you move the appointment in seconds once your schedule firms up. Holding a slot you might move is better than holding none.

Will I get reminders?

Yes. Confirmation when you book, a reminder a few days before, and another the day before the appointment. Reminders go to the phone number and email on file.

Can I pre-book online without coming in first?

Yes. New clients book online too. For color and extensions, your first booking should be a consultation. For cuts, you can book the appointment directly.

Do you offer a loyalty discount for pre-booking?

We don't run formal point programs. The benefit of pre-booking is the guaranteed slot and the consistent results.
