Chicago weather is the reason we sell as much smoothing as we do. Summer humidity bouncing off Lake Michigan and winter dry heat from forced-air radiators are two opposite enemies of frizz control. A keratin or Brazilian-style smoothing addresses both. The catch is that results vary wildly between salons. A treatment that lasts five months at one chair can wash out in six weeks at another. The variable is rarely the brand. It is the application.
What is a keratin treatment, exactly?
A keratin or Brazilian-style smoothing treatment is a service that uses a heat-activated solution to bond keratin and other smoothing agents to the cuticle layer of the hair. The treatment seals the cuticle flat, reduces porosity, and dramatically lowers frizz response to humidity. It is not a relaxer and it does not chemically restructure the hair. When the treatment wears off, the hair returns to its natural texture without a line of demarcation.
The umbrella term "Brazilian-style smoothing" covers a category of treatments that grew out of professional smoothing systems developed in Brazil and refined globally. Modern formulations are formaldehyde-free or use safer alternatives. Always ask what your stylist is using and request the ingredient sheet if you want to confirm.
What makes a smoothing actually last?
Three things determine how long the result holds.
The application
The solution has to be saturated evenly through small sections. Skipping sections or under-saturating is the most common reason a treatment under-performs. Each section should be combed through, blow-dried to a specific moisture level, then flat-ironed at a temperature that varies by hair type and product instructions. The flat-iron pass is what activates the bond.
The seal-in window
Most treatments require the client to leave the hair untouched for 24 to 72 hours after the appointment. No washing, no tying up, no putting it behind ears, no headbands, no clips that crease the hair. The seal is forming during this window. Crease the hair and you create a permanent bend until the treatment grows out. Wash too soon and you wash some of the bond out.
The aftercare
Sulfate-free shampoo is non-negotiable after a smoothing. Sulfates strip the bond and shorten the lifespan of the treatment. We send every smoothing client home with a recommendation. Most often that is Milbon Smoothing shampoo and conditioner. Salt-water and chlorine also shorten the result, so if you swim regularly, plan to wet-rinse before and after pool exposure.
How long does the appointment take?
A smoothing appointment runs 2 to 3 hours depending on hair length and density. Shorter hair finishes closer to 2 hours. Long, thick hair runs closer to 3. The appointment includes the consultation, a clarifying shampoo, the application, the processing time, the blow-dry, and the section-by-section flat-iron pass that seals the treatment.
How long does the result last?
3 to 5 months for most clients. Longer if you wash less frequently, use sulfate-free product, and avoid swim chemicals. Shorter if you wash daily and use drugstore shampoo containing sulfates. The treatment fades gradually rather than washing out abruptly, which is why there is no demarcation line at the regrowth.
A note from our team on Chicago weather
We see two big seasonal spikes in smoothing bookings. The first is May into June when humidity starts climbing and clients realize their summer routine is not going to survive a Lake Michigan-side walk to work. The second is October into November when the heat turns on indoors and hair gets dry, static, and prone to flyaways. Both seasons benefit from a smoothing. Most of our long-term smoothing clients schedule their service at the start of one of those windows so the protection kicks in before the worst weather does.
Will keratin make my hair straight?
Not in the way a relaxer would. A smoothing reduces texture and frizz but does not chemically straighten the hair. Wavy hair becomes a looser, smoother wave. Curly hair becomes a looser curl with less frizz and faster drying time. If you want your hair to be pin-straight without styling, this is not the right service. We will tell you that in consultation.
What this is not, and who shouldn't book a smoothing
A smoothing is not a relaxer and it is not a permanent change. If you are expecting bone-straight hair from a keratin, you will be disappointed. If you want your natural curl pattern fully intact and untouched, you also should not book a smoothing because the service is specifically designed to soften texture.
Smoothing is also not the right service for clients who cannot commit to the 24 to 72 hour seal-in window. If you have an event the next day, a workout planned for that afternoon, or a job that requires headsets or hats during the seal period, book around it. We have rebooked enough clients who creased a fresh smoothing to know the timing matters as much as the application.
Lastly, if your hair is mid-correction or actively breaking, we will recommend pausing on the smoothing until the hair is stable. The heat pass is meaningful and stressed hair handles it less well.
Booking a smoothing in River North
We are at 223 W Erie Street, Suite 1E, in River North. The Chicago Riverwalk is half a block from our door and we are six blocks from theMART. Most of our smoothing clients book a consultation first so we can see hair texture, talk through aftercare, and confirm timing for the seal-in window.
For more on our smoothing service see our texture and smoothing services page. If you are coming from the western suburbs see our keratin treatment page for Maywood-area clients. For related reading see our guide to hair extensions in Chicago, since many smoothing clients ask about combining the two services.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a keratin treatment cost at 3rd Coast Salon?
The smoothing service is consultation-priced based on hair length and density. We quote you at the consultation rather than over the phone because length and density change the product amount.
Is a Brazilian-style smoothing safe?
Modern formulations are formaldehyde-free or use significantly safer alternatives. Always confirm with your salon what they are using. We can walk you through the product ingredient list before booking.
How long do I have to wait to wash my hair after?
Most treatments require 24 to 72 hours of no washing, no tying up, no clips, and no creases. The exact window depends on the product. We tell you at the appointment.
Can I color my hair the same day as a smoothing?
We typically color first, then smooth. Coloring after a fresh smoothing can disrupt the seal. We will schedule the two services in the right order during your consultation.
Will a keratin work on curly hair?
Yes. The result loosens the curl pattern and reduces frizz without flattening the hair. We will not promise bone-straight results from a smoothing.
How long does the treatment last?
3 to 5 months for most clients, depending on aftercare and wash frequency.
Can I work out after a smoothing?
Not during the seal-in window. Sweat at the scalp can shorten the bond. After 72 hours you are clear to return to your normal routine.
Should I get a smoothing or just a blow-dry treatment?
If you only want one event's worth of smoothness, a blowout is enough. If you want months of humidity protection, a smoothing is the right call.
