Hair Extensions in Chicago: Hand-Tied vs Tape-In vs Beaded Wefts
The extensions question we hear most often is which method is best. The honest answer is that there is no universally best method. There is a best method for your hair, your scalp, your routine, and your budget. The mistake clients make is reading one viral post about one method and assuming it is the right call. The mistake stylists make is selling one method to every client because it is the one they were certified in. We carry multiple methods at 3rd Coast Salon so we can match the install to the client instead of the other way around.
What are hand-tied extensions?
Hand-tied extensions are wefts of hair sewn by hand onto a thin track of beads installed along the natural hair. The wefts lie flat against the scalp because the foundation row is small and the weft is thin. The result is a soft, undetectable install that moves naturally and is comfortable to sleep on.
Hand-tied is the method we recommend most often for clients who want length and density without bulk. They sit flat, they blend at the part line, and they pass the touch test. The trade is that they take longer to install. A full head of hand-tied takes 2 to 3 hours and uses 2 to 4 rows depending on density goals.
Who is hand-tied best for?
Clients with fine to medium hair who want a seamless look. Clients who part their hair regularly and need the track to disappear. Clients who can commit to a move-up every 6 to 8 weeks. Hand-tied is not the right call for very thick hair that already has a lot of natural density. The benefit margin is smaller.
What are tape-in extensions?
Tape-ins are pre-bonded wefts of hair that sandwich a small section of natural hair between two adhesive strips. The install is fast. A full head takes 60 to 90 minutes. Tape-ins lie very flat and are nearly invisible at the part. The bond is medical-grade adhesive that releases cleanly with the right remover.
Tape-ins are a strong choice for clients who want extensions without committing to the longer install of hand-tied. They are also our go-to for clients who only need to add length in a few specific zones rather than full-head density.
Who is tape-in best for?
Clients who want a quick install and a flat sit. Clients adding length only to specific sections. Clients who want to try extensions for the first time without a multi-hour appointment. Tape-ins are not always the right call for clients with extremely oily scalps because oil can shorten the bond life.
What are beaded weft extensions?
Beaded wefts are machine-sewn or hand-sewn wefts attached to the natural hair using small silicone-lined beads. No glue, no heat, no tape. The bead grips a small section of natural hair and holds the weft in place. Installation runs 90 minutes to 2 hours for a full head.
Beaded wefts are a strong middle ground between hand-tied and tape-in. They are less time-intensive to install than hand-tied but lie almost as flat. They are reusable across multiple move-up appointments, which can stretch the cost over time.
Who are beaded wefts best for?
Clients who want a no-adhesive method. Clients with medium hair density who want length and fullness. Clients who plan to wear extensions long-term and want to reuse hair across appointments. Beaded wefts can feel bulkier than hand-tied for clients with very fine hair, so we evaluate density in consultation.
How long does each method last between move-ups?
Move-up windows depend on how fast your natural hair grows. The general numbers we see in our chairs:
- Hand-tied: 6 to 8 weeks between move-ups
- Tape-in: 6 to 8 weeks between move-ups, with bonds replaced each time
- Beaded wefts: 8 to 10 weeks between move-ups
Most of our extension clients build a maintenance schedule into their booking. We rebook the next move-up before they leave the chair so they are not scrambling for an appointment when the row starts to slide down.
A note from Phillip on the consultation
I run our extension consultations and they are free. The consultation is where I figure out which method fits you. I look at your natural density, your scalp condition, how your hair behaves in Chicago humidity, what your goal length and weight are, and what your maintenance budget realistically looks like. Then I tell you which of the three methods I would install and why. If none of them are right for you, I will say that too. Selling someone the wrong extension method to make a booking is how clients end up at another salon in three months. I would rather lose the booking than do that.
What this is not, and who extensions aren't for
Extensions are not a fix for unhealthy hair. If your natural hair is breaking, shedding excessively, or showing scalp tenderness, adding weight at the root will make all three of those things worse. We will redirect you to a conditioning treatment series and a scalp consultation before we install anything.
Extensions are also not low-maintenance. The marketing language around extensions sometimes implies you wash them, style them, and forget them. The reality is that extensions need their own brush, their own wash routine, their own sleeping setup, and their own move-up schedule. If you cannot commit to a 6 to 8 week salon cadence, extensions will not stay looking great no matter who installs them.
Booking an extension consultation in River North
We are at 223 W Erie Street, Suite 1E, in River North. The consultation is 20 minutes and is the right starting point for every new extension client. We do not install extensions same-day for new clients because we want to order the right color match before the install appointment. Hair is ordered after the consultation.
For more on our extension service see our extensions page. If you are coming from the west suburbs see our extensions page for Lyons-area clients. For related reading see our guide to balayage, since many extension clients also color the install for blended dimension.
Frequently asked questions
How much do hair extensions cost at 3rd Coast Salon?
Extensions are consultation-priced because the cost depends on hair length, density goal, and method. We quote the full install plus the hair after the consultation so you have a written number before you order.
How long do extensions last?
The hair itself can last 6 to 12 months with proper care, depending on method. Move-ups happen every 6 to 10 weeks during that period to keep the install positioned correctly.
Will extensions damage my natural hair?
Installed and removed correctly, no. The most common cause of damage is over-tight installation or clients not coming in for move-ups on schedule. Both are avoidable.
Can I color my extensions?
We can gloss extensions to refresh tone. We do not recommend lifting extension hair because the lift process changes the integrity of pre-colored extension hair.
Can I wear extensions in a workout?
Yes, with the right brush and the right post-workout routine. We give every extension client a take-home care sheet at the install appointment.
How do I sleep with extensions?
Loose braid or low loose ponytail on a silk or satin pillowcase. Never sleep on wet extensions.
Can I get extensions if I have fine or thinning hair?
Often yes, but the method matters. Hand-tied is usually our recommendation for fine hair because the foundation row is the smallest and lightest.
How far in advance should I book?
Book the consultation first, which we can usually fit within 1 to 2 weeks. The install appointment is then booked 2 to 4 weeks out to allow hair-ordering time.
