Balayage in Evanston, IL
Evanston sits just north of Rogers Park, wrapping Northwestern University and the lakefront from South Boulevard up to Isabella Street. Most of our Evanston clients are Northwestern faculty, grad students, hospital staff at Northwestern Memorial Evanston, or families who have lived in the East Side and Lakeshore neighborhoods for ten-plus years. They are not asking for a viral balayage. They are asking for color that holds up under fluorescent lecture-hall lighting, at a hospital, or across a long conference table.
Why Evanston residents book balayage at 3rd Coast Salon
The Evanston balayage brief is its own thing. We hear words like dimensional, soft, lived-in, polished. We rarely hear chunky, statement, or bright. A typical Evanston client wants their highlights to read at the edges of their face in natural Lake Michigan light, hold up through a long academic semester, and grow out without a band. That is a specific brief and Kevin paints to it differently than he would paint a Lakeview client booked for copper money pieces.
Several of our regulars first came to us through Northwestern's grad-program networks. Word of mouth in Evanston runs along faculty floors, residency cohorts, and the parent groups around Roycemore and ETHS. That means our Evanston balayage clients show up referenced, often with photos of a friend's hair, asking for something tonally similar but suited to their own base. We respect that pipeline. Kevin keeps notes on which highlights work in which professional contexts so the family that referred you sees consistent quality.
Evanston balayage also tends toward cooler tones than the western suburbs. Lakefront proximity, the climate of campus dress codes, and a more European tonal palette pull our Evanston work toward beige, sand, and pearl rather than caramel or honey. Kevin tones every balayage at the bowl, and for Evanston clients that toner is usually on the cooler shelf.
Our balayage process
Every balayage at 3rd Coast Salon starts with a fifteen-minute consultation. Kevin looks at your natural fall, your part, your face shape, and your current tonal base. He asks where you part your hair on a Tuesday morning at work, because that is where the brightest pieces should sit. He paints freehand, no foils unless the lift needs the heat, and processes open-air for sixty to ninety minutes depending on your starting level.
After lift, we wash, tone, and run an Olaplex bond builder through the mid-lengths. Cut and blowdry happen after the tone, never before, because we want the shape to reflect where the lightest pieces actually sit. Total chair time runs three to four hours. We do not double-book Kevin during a balayage. You get his full attention from consult through finish.
Stylist spotlight: Kevin
Kevin anchors our balayage work. His painting style leans hand-painted and freehand, with very few foils. For Evanston clients specifically, he tends toward smaller, more frequent ribbon pieces around the hairline and a softer mid-shaft, which reads dimensional rather than streaky.
Kevin writes a maintenance plan after every balayage appointment. Evanston balayage typically refreshes every ten to twelve weeks, with a gloss-only visit halfway through to keep the tone from going brassy in lake humidity. If you commute to campus by foot or bike, expect a slightly faster shift from the UV exposure and plan your refresh on the shorter end.
Getting to 3rd Coast Salon from Evanston
Two real options. Metra Union Pacific North from Davis Street to Ogilvie Transportation Center takes about twenty-five to thirty minutes depending on the express schedule. From Ogilvie, it is a ten-minute rideshare or a twelve-minute walk across the river to 223 W Erie. Door to chair averages forty-five to fifty minutes by transit.
By car, take Lake Shore Drive south or Ridge Avenue down through Rogers Park into Edgewater and Lincoln Park. Most clients use LSD, exit at Ohio Street, and find paid parking within two blocks. Off-peak the drive is twenty-five minutes, peak rush can stretch to forty-five. Several of our Wilmette and Highland Park regulars carpool down with Evanston neighbors.
Who this isn't for
If you want a one-day jump from a level 4 brown to a platinum balayage, we will not do that in a single visit. We will plan it across two or three sessions. We also do not do balayage on hair that is currently sitting on chemical relaxer or fresh keratin within four weeks of the appointment. If you are unsure, send a photo through the booking system before the consultation.
Frequently asked questions
How long is the trip from Evanston to 3rd Coast Salon?
About forty-five minutes by Metra from Davis Street to Ogilvie plus a short rideshare. Twenty-five minutes by car off-peak.
How long does a balayage appointment take?
Three to four hours from consult to blowdry. Includes painting, processing, tone, Olaplex, cut, and finish.
How often should I refresh?
Most Evanston clients come in every ten to twelve weeks for a full refresh with a gloss-only mid-cycle visit.
Can you do balayage on darker virgin hair?
Yes. Kevin will scope what is possible in one visit and what needs to be staged. Some level 3 and 4 bases need two sessions to reach the brightness you want safely.
What does it cost?
Pricing is consultation-based and depends on hair length, density, and starting level. We will quote at consultation and book the appointment to that estimate.
Do you use foils or freehand?
Kevin paints freehand for most balayage work. Foils only come in when the lift needs additional heat for a specific section.
Will my balayage grow out without a line?
That is the whole point of balayage versus foils. Hand-painted pieces blur into the base as the hair grows, which is why we do not foil unless we have to.
Do you tone every visit?
Yes. Every balayage at 3rd Coast Salon includes a tone at the bowl after rinse, included in the appointment.
